This is actually an old Philadelphia potion known as "Fish House
Punch," but I’m sure it’s drifted down D.C. way. One cup of this and Beaman
might propose to Mrs. Marsden! Careful, it’s potent, but very festive! (And yes, in the show they are drinking eggnog, but this is too good to leave out!)
2
cups fresh-squeezed lemon juice (approximately 12 lemons)
3/4 cup superfine
sugar
A block or ring of ice that fits in your punch bowl
1 1/2 quarts
brandy
1 pint peach brandy
1 pint dark rum
1 1/2 quarts carbonated water
(seltzer)
In a large punch bowl (holding at least 5-6 quarts), mix the
lemon juice with the superfine sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Then add the
block or ring of ice. (See the recipe for "Family-Style Fruit Punch" for detailed directions for making a fancy ice ring.)
To the
punch bowl, add the brandy, peach brandy, rum and carbonated water. Stir gently.
Serve in small punch cups. Makes about 40 servings.
